Hot Toys For The Holidays

Monday, October 10, 2011

It's been awhile since I've posted. Things have been pretty crazy lately.

I've been at work. A lot. I feel like I barely have time to take a breath anymore. Thankfully, it looks like things might be slowing for just a bit before the Christmas season gets into full swing.

What do I do, you may wonder? I work in retail. Specifically, in toys. Since I have a bit of knowledge on the subject, I figured I'd let you in on what toys look like they're going to be hot this year.

Let's Rock Elmo

Elmo comes with a microphone, tambourine and bongo drums. He sings kid-friendly versions of classic songs like "It Takes Two" and "What I Like About You". Elmo even knows what instrument you give him to play. You can buy additional instruments (Elmo's guitar, Grover's microphone and Cookie's keyboard) and Elmo interacts with those too. Elmo's not cheap (the Elmo set costs around $60, and the additional instruments would put you over $100 if you bought everything), but little kids LOVE him. We have a display set up in our store, and no toddler/preschooler can resist pushing the button. Heck, most adults can't resist it. There are already websites set up solely to sell these at "the best, lowest prices!", although I'm not sure why, because we still have them in the store. Either way, they're going to be a popular gift this Christmas.
Fijit Friends

They talk. They dance. They understand 30 simple commands. They even tell jokes. These incredibly interactive toys are amazingly soft. It's kind of like having a squishy little robot that talks in sing-song. They're a new kind of toy.

Monster High Dolls

Clawdeen Wolf, Lagoona Blue, Cle de Nile, Deuce Gorgon, Frankie Stein, Draculaura

Monster High dolls are crazy popular with little girls and preteens. They're the creeptastic Barbies you never knew your childhood was missing. They're the children of famous monsters (everyone from Dracula to Medusa to Mr. Hyde), and they come dressed for every occasion: there are the dressed-for-school regular dolls, the Dead Tired pajama party dolls, the Gloom Beach spring break dolls and the Dawn of the Dance party dolls. Some of the dolls have beds you can buy (Frankie's doubles as a mirror and Draculaura's is a jewelry box; Clawdeen and Lagoona's come with Dead Tired dolls). Little girls can even dress like their favorite doll (provided their favorite doll is Frankie, Clawdeen or Draculaura) with petticoat skirts, boleros, wigs and cosmetic sets.

The most popular Monster High doll for the holiday season?

Abbey Bominable, daughter of the Yeti. I cannot tell you how many people ask me each week if we have her in (we never have, actually...she's incredibly elusive). She's the one to get. A somewhat-acceptable alternative seems to be Spectra Vondergeist, daughter of a ghost.

We usually only get one Spectra doll per shipment, so she's not as common as the others, but not as hard to find as Abbey. A little girl who came in looking for Abbey left with a Spectra.

LeapFrog LeapPad Explorer Tablet
comes in green and pink
The LeapPad Explorer is a wondrous little piece of educational technology. It has a built-in camera and video recorder. You can get numerous games and apps for it, and each one will help your child learn and/or increase their skills. The LeapPad Explorer can help teach your child math, science, social studies, language and literature, and there are numerous games and apps to help enhance creativity. Plus little kids love to mimic their parents, and this would get them to stop asking to play with your iPad!

Transformers Dark of the Moon Mechtech Ultimate Optimus Prime

With lots of battle noises and glowing weapons, it's no surprise the the Ultimate Optimus Prime is wildly popular with boys of all ages. Not to mention that this sucker is HUGE. Transform a truck into an impressive robowarrior, and transform the trailer into his armor. The bad guys won't stand a chance.
