DIY Bow (As Used For a Puppy Bowtie)

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

Bows are one of the easiest things to make.  These work for bow ties, hair bows, anything you may need  a bow for.

Note: I didn't use any interfacing for this bow.  If you want a bigger and/or stiffer bow, I highly recommend using interfacing.

1.) Pick your fabric (obviously).  I picked this black gingham, because it looked festive yet fun, and it matched Archie's black collar (I was originally going to cover his entire collar in fabric, but my sewing machine disagreed with me).

2.) Decide how big you want your bow to be.  I just eyeballed mine based on Archie's size, but definitely feel free to use exact measurements.  Your fabric should be the height you want your bow by twice the length.

3.) Fold your fabric in half so the right sides (the side with the pattern) are touching.  Sew around the open edges, being sure to leave a space open to turn it inside out.

4.) Push the inside of the bow through the hole, and push and pull until everything is right-side out.  This will leave you with a sewn rectangle with a small open space on one side.

5.) Topstitch the hole closed.  If you want a more polished look, you can topstitch along the entire bow.  Since this was going on Archie's collar, and I figured he'd rip it off (he didn't...I was so proud!), I only sewed the hole shut.

6.) Pinch the middle of your bow together.

7.) Sew the bow together in the middle (at the spot you just pinched, with your fingers out of the way, of course!)

8.) Cut a small strip of fabric that goes all the way around the middle of the bow.  Sew shut.   And there you have your basic bow!

To attach the bow to Archie's collar, I cut another strip similar to the middle of the bow but that was long enough to go around the collar and bow together.  Sew the ends together (I did not sew it to the collar, but if your machine will let you do that, by all means, do it.  I also added a dab of hot glue for a little extra stability.

Slide the bow through the loop.  You're done!  Easy peasy.

    1. Hi Alisha! I have some pictures of him wearing it here http://www.goodgirlgonewife.com/2012/05/happy-birthday-archie.html , but he's a wiggly worm so they aren't very good pictures. He was surprisingly good about it...he didn't try to take it off or anything!
