It Takes A Village?

I love the movie The Village.  A lot of people didn't.

I've been thinking a lot over the past few months about the kind of life I want to live, and the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of living how they did in the movie.

Now I'm not talking about period dress and no electricity.  I'm not sure I could handle that.  But I love the idea of a small, tight-knit community of people living together and working together to make everything run.  People pitching in to grow crops, watching children, build homes...a commune of sorts.

I don't necessarily think this will happen, but it's kind of nice to think about.  When we have a house, I love the idea of being as self-sufficient as possible.  I want to be a homesteader.  I want to grow as much of our food as I can, make as much of our food from scratch as I can, raise chickens, build furniture, sew clothes, etc.  I realize this kind of seems like a lofty goal, but I think it's something nice to aspire to.

My friend Seth once told me that he'd love to one day have a huge house that was divided into wings where our group of friends lived together...each of us would live in our own wing with our future families, but we'd have big common areas for being together.  I just love the idea of this big togetherness feeling.

I'm not entirely sure what the point of this post is.  I yearn for a sense of community, I guess.  The world can be a scary place, and there are a lot of people who are only concerned about themselves; it may be naive, but I just miss Mayberry.

  1. I.MISS.MAYBERRY!! That would be so amazing to live in a self sufficient community or household. I've been watching that crazy show Doomsday Preppers and it seems CRAZY, but not so CRAZY?! And who doesn't like that movie?! Come on now! It was so good!!

    1. I haven't seen Doomsday Preppers. What channel is it on?

And I know SO many people who thought The Village sucked. I loved it though. I'm such an M. Knight Shyamalan fan.

  2. I was going to say that is what makes the world so fun, the fact that we are all so different. I was thinking a village just wouldn't work for me. Give me city lights and lots of restaurants. Then you mentioned Mayberry and you suckered me in. :D I miss it too. So maybe there is a little village in me too. :D

    1. :)

I love big cities, don't get me wrong. And people would totally be able to leave when they want (I wouldn't want all the restrictions they had in The Village). I just like the idea of people helping each other out, I guess. And evening news that isn't totally depressing.

    1. But it was SO GOOD! I love suspense! I'd take a psychological thriller over a horror movie any day :)

  5. You should read Walden Two by B.F. Skinner. The book is about a communal utopian village. There's a lot of social commentary in it, but its to be expected in that type of book.
