31 Days to Surviving NaNoWriMo - Have Some FunFriday, October 19, 2012
I personally think fun is an integral part of life. Fun during NaNo means two things:
-Make sure you take time to have fun in life too. Don't skip Thanksgiving (American, that is) just for the sake of writing if what you really want is to stuff your face and watch football. I didn't write at all last Thanksgiving; I just made up for it by writing more another day. You need to be able to enjoy life, and it's hard to do that if you're spending every free second about to tear out your hair because you can't come up with a plot. Go shopping, have a drink with a friend, head to the gym...whatever is fun for you, do it (not all the time, obviously...you do have 50,000 words to write, after all).
-Have fun in your novel. Want to create a setting entirely made from apple pies? Go for it! Want to throw in a character based on your eighth grade algebra teacher mixed with your great-grandma's boyfriend? Why shouldn't you? Don't be afraid to be a little silly, even in a serious story. If you feel like your silliness doesn't mesh well with the rest of the story, you can always edit it out later (though personally, I enjoy a light-hearted element or two in a good drama).
So there you have it, folks. Go forth and have fun, so sayeth I.
