A (Kind Of?) Blank Canvas

Monday, January 28, 2013

Back in August, I posted that nausea-inducing home tour of our new place, and I talked about how excited I was to decorate everything and how I'd be blogging about it.  You've probably noticed that it hasn't happened.

It's not that I haven't felt like doing it (trust me, I have), I just haven't had the money to. We literally haven't had ANY extra money. Thankfully, we're going to be bringing in more income in the coming months (and just in time for rummage sale season - SCORE!), so there's going to be a lot of DIY and decorating (and blogging about it, of course!) going on.

Our lease is up in July, but our landlord needs to know if we're planning on staying now. We weren't necessarily planning to, but since we weren't planning on making this decision for another three or four months, it was a bit of a surprise. Given our short time frame, and the fact that we don't know how things will be six months from now, we've decided to stay. We figure this will end up being more economical for us in the long run; we'll be able to build up our credit, maybe start saving for a down payment on a house, and make some improvements/upgrades around our current place (not to mention FINALLY go on vacation!).

The first thing I want to do is PAINT THESE WALLS!

Whoever was in charge of painting these walls was possibly on drugs or something at the time, because there is no method to the madness. The living room (as well as the back of the hallway) is painted a tan, fleshy color (it legitimately looks like a Barbie or something, or, as I call it, naked people). It's not attractive. The guest room/office/hopefully future nursery that's currently being used as a dumping ground for stuff and the kitchen are painted a light gray that seems to have the tiniest touch of lavender in it. The bathroom and laundry room (which is right off our bedroom) are green, and not a bad green, but it seems weird in the bathroom for some reason. Our bedroom is brown, and I don't like it. The front of the hallway is a deep, almost navy, blue, and it's the only color I actually kind of like.

The first room I want to paint is definitely the living room. It's absolutely terrible. Walls should never be flesh-colored. I'm not entirely sure, but I think I might like a light blue in there, like Behr Sugar Pool.

As for the guest room/office/hopefully future nursery, since we're hoping it will one day be a nursery, I'll probably paint it the color I want to paint a nursery, which is Behr Carolina Parakeet.

I'm not sure about the hallway -- I might paint it the same color as the living room to keep things from feeling so disjointed.

As for the bathroom, I definitely want to go lighter. Even though it's a small bathroom, I want to create a place that feels clean, fresh, and serene. I'm thinking maybe something like Behr Minty Frosting (or maybe even a bit lighter!).

I'm still undecided on the master bedroom. I'll get back to you on that one.

As for the kitchen, I've debated leaving it alone, but I suppose we'll see about that one too (I'm so freaking indecisive).

I've always been drawn to cool colors (though I LOVE yellow), so I'm not at all surprised to see shades of blues and greens on this list.

What do you think? Have you used any similar shades?

  1. Ummm. I'm awful at picking paint colors... hence why after almost a year of home ownership all the walls in my house are still nasty builder's beige. I have picked two "grays" one for the kitchen and one for the bathroom. Bedroom color ended up being more blue and is very ugly. The kitchen turned out kinda blue-ish but I can live with it.

    1. I really like gray, but since Tom likes black furniture, I'm trying to keep things from being too dark. I might go with a pewter or something though.

  2. I'm horribly indecisive about paint colors! But I will say I love greys. I love a dark charcoal with white trimming. I really like the colors you picked, though!

    1. I love charcoal too! Since we're renting though, I figured lighter colors would be better since they're easier to paint over.

I painted our hallway bathroom a dark gray, since there is a window in it and lots of light comes in, and I totally love it. Our master bedroom has a tiny half-bath, which also has a window, and I painted it a bright forest green, and I love that too. The master bedroom is next, which is going to be kind of tea-colored to go with the green in the bathroom. We also have a green/brown/gold quilt on the bed and I want to put up green curtains, so it should all go really well together.

    1. One of my friends has a similar color scheme in her bedroom. Brown and green go great together, but I'm not really a brown person. I bet everything will look great when it's finished!

  5. I'm not too big on the Carolina Parakeet color, but the others are definitely nice! We're currently living in an apartment with all white walls, so we're not planning on painting only to have to paint it back when we leave. So not worth it!

    1. It's way prettier in person, I swear.

And I totally get the whole white-walled apartment thing -- our last place was like that, and it about drove my husband insane. We didn't paint for the same reason -- it's a lot of work to paint everything white again! Thankfully we don't have to re-paint anything when we leave our current place, or I'd probably just put up with this wretched fleshy living room.

And thanks so much! My husband thinks it sounds like a porno, lol. I LOVE your blog btw -- you're in my daily reads list (which is currently being updated, and isn't up on the blog at the moment). I'm so excited you stopped by!
