It Just Got RealMonday, October 26, 2015
So I've debated whether or not to post about this (because on one hand, I'm terrified of jinxing it), but we may have a potential foster placement.
I have a friend who has a friend who fosters. I met her (and the children she was fostering -- two of whom she has since adopted) about a year ago, when Tom and I were still talking about starting the fostering process in 2016. A few months ago, she received a three-year-old boy (he'll be four in a few weeks). We met him, and just absolutely fell in love with him. He will probably be moving toward adoption soon, but when they asked his foster mother if she wanted to adopt him, she was unable to; instead, she recommended us.
I received a call from his caseworker a few weeks ago asking if we would also be willing to take his younger brother, who is in a different home; of course I said yes! Our licensing progress had been stalled a bit because our foster care specialist has been on maternity leave, but we just figured if the parents' rights are terminated, they would be moved into our home, so we'd have time to finish up licensing.
Last week, their caseworker called me again and asked if we could take the younger boy this coming Friday. We started scrambling around to see if we could possibly get everything else finished in a week and a half (thankfully, our foster care specialist is back, so we can get the ball rolling). A week and a half is NOT a lot of time to get everything done, but thankfully, we the younger boy's foster home said they could keep him until just before Thanksgiving to help give us some time.
So provided that we're approved to be licensed, we'll have a little one (or two -- I'm not sure when the older one would be joining us) in our home by Thanksgiving (and our Disney trip -- if we're able, we'll take him with us!).
We're ridiculously excited at the prospect of finally being parents, if not forever, then however long we're able to. We've been spending the last couple of weeks preparing; we've bought clothes for both boys and toys, and this weekend I ordered a car seat for the older one (he's bigger than your average almost-four-year-old, and though they both *should* come with car seats, it would be good to have them in each car), and a diaper bag.
I can't believe that after all this time, it's finally happening.
